The City of Wagga Wagga has released a draft masterplan for the upgrade and expansion of Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre.
Designed by ARM Architecture, the concept would see two additional venues built adjacent to the existing Civic Theatre, which include a new live music venue with a retractable window/wall for indoor/outdoor events on the Wollundry Lagoon, and an intimate gig and events venue.
The existing theatre would also be updated. The project would triple the total capacity from 491 seats to 1465.
"The draft Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre Masterplan outlines the way forward to develop a contemporary performing arts centre that meets the current and future needs of the community," Janice Summerhayes, director of community at City of Wagga Wagga.
"There is a long process that unfolds before plans like this are built, but having a solid plan and a blueprint in place allows us to be ready to apply for grant funding when it becomes available."
The project is one of two concepts put forward by the council for potential development.
The second project is an entertainment, conference and convention centre, partnered with a Wiradjuri Keeping Place and cultural education centre, to be located on the Murrumbidgee riverfront along the Wiradjuri Trail and opposite the existing Civic Theatre.
The two options were first released in November 2023, when the council sought feedback on which of the two should be the highest priority. The council is progressing with both projects to be ready for grant funding.
The draft masterplan for the civic theatre is on exhibition for public feedback until 10 May.
